LIFESKILL of the week: Problem Solving. Discuss examples of problem solving with your child and encourage your child to use this at home, at school, and in the community.
Character day: Students are welcome to dress as their favorite book character tomorrow, Friday! Be sure to bring your book with you.
No school Friday, March 13th!
Save the date: Family and friends lunch for third grade is Thursday, March 19th at 11:30am.
Looking ahead at next week: As mathematicians, the students will continue defining and classifying quadrilaterals and combining shapes. They will also have to identify and recognize three-dimensional shapes based on their nets. We are also working hard on our multiplication fluency for our 3s and 4s. Keep practicing facts at home, too! They will have a fluency quiz on Wednesday, March 25th on 3s and 4s. Students should be able to answer 20 questions in one minute (about 3 seconds each). As scientists, the students will wrap up their study on heat and matter by learning about conductors and insulators. As readers, we will finish studying figurative language and explain how writers use them to shape meaning. They will focus closely on similes, metaphors, personification, and idioms. There will be a figurative language test Thursday, March 12th. See websites below for practice. As writers, we will continue a unit focusing on reading a text, analyzing it, and constructing responses to answer questions relating to the text. They will also focus on using conjunctions to write complex sentences. As spellers, we will have a preassessment for R-controlled spelling words next week, too.

Hello families! I hope you all enjoyed your long weekend with your sweet kids. I am so glad that all of our families were safe and secure during this week's weather.
Rescheduled Events: Open House has been rescheduled for Tuesday, September 10, 2019. The third grade time is scheduled for 6:00-6:45pm. Also, "Goodies for Grands" has been rescheduled for Wednesday, September 11, 2019 from 7:30-8:00am.

Social Studies study guide: Just a reminder that your child's social studies study guide is due Wednesday, September 11 (It was issued Wednesday, September 4). The children will take the unit test in two parts - they will have a vocabulary test September 12 (on the vocabulary words in their fact file, which are the same words on the study guide) and they will have a unit test September 13. In order to be successful on this unit assessment, students will need to review the study guide, chapter one in their book, as well as all items in their fact file. (This is a booklet we have been working on in class. They will be able to bring it home on Monday). They will need to know how to label a South Carolina map with the regions, river systems, fall line, and bordering states and ocean. They will not need to memorize the major cities' exact locations, but should be comfortable with where they are in our state. Please know as the year goes on, that the students will be asked to be responsible for knowing what to study, but since it is their first BIG third grade test, I wanted to give you a bit of guidance. Also, please note: Students must return their textbook and fact file each day. Please make sure your child does not leave these resources at home! The fact file will be turned in the day of the unit test for a grade.
Xtramath parent letter: Students will be receiving a letter, regarding the Xtramath program, in their communication folders Thursday. This is a great site for students to use, in order to practice their math fluency skills. We will use it in class, as well. Please remember that all passwords for the programs we use will be stapled in students' homework folders as soon as we are able to finalize passwords. Thank you for your patience!
Communication Folders: Students will be receiving their first set of graded papers in their communication folders. You may keep his/her graded work after reviewing it with your child. Additionally, be sure to read over the 3rd grade handbook that was sent in the folders today. It will be referred to during Open House next week, but due to the cancellation of Open House yesterday, I wanted to make sure and send that information to you as soon as possible.

(We will not be doing lessons 2-3 and 2-4). In reading, students will be continue building their reading stamina and discussing how to choose a "just right" book. They will also practice reading in partnerships. The children will also review elements of a story, focusing on characters and setting. As writers, students will continue studying basic writing skills and learning parts of speech. Students will also continue their narrative writing unit.
Thank you again for all of your support and enthusiasm! I hope you all have a wonderful weekend!
LIFESKILL of the week: The LIFESKILL of the week is integrity! Discuss examples of integrity with your child and celebrate moments of using this LIFESKILL.
Field Trip payments/forms: Students will be enjoying their first "Being THERE Experience" before we know it! Please sign and return the form that went home in last week's communication folder. You may make the payment(s) online through Parent Portal, as well as, sign the permission form. If you have any questions, please let Mrs. Robinson (in the office) know! Please sign and return the goldenrod-colored Camp Discovery forms that went home last week, as soon as possible! If you need another copy, please look on the Helpful Documents link.

Hello, families! We are having a wonderful first full week of school. I hope you and your child had a great start to the school year! I know I've enjoyed getting to know all of the children. It is going to be a wonderful year!
"Mrs. Wilemon's 3rd Grade Parent Page": Welcome to our parent website. This is how I will be communicating with families each week, in an effort to save paper. You will find important dates, class happenings and even see pictures of things we do in class. This newsletter will be updated every Thursday. I'm asking that you bookmark this site and check it out every week, in order to stay informed about our class. If you do not have weekly computer access, please let me know.
Important forms: Please sign and return all of the forms that will be sent home in this week's communication folder. All of the information needs to be filed in the office or in my classroom. I can always be reached at: [email protected].
Homework: Your child will be issued his/her homework sheet Thursdays. This sheet will not be due until the following Thursday. We will discuss homework procedures at Open House a bit more, but I just wanted to make you aware that your child will have one week to complete this homework sheet. This allows students to learn time management and responsibility skills. For instance, if your child plays a sport two nights a week, you can double-up on a night with no ball practice. If you would like to challenge your child, he/she may do more than four choice activities. Please understand that students will not receive an extra homework sheet if they lose their initial one (this is a third grade procedure). However, you will find a copy on the "Helpful Documents" tab should you need to obtain one.
Transportation: If your child's transportation has changed (or is ever is different than usual throughout the school year), please send a note with your child to school.
Field trips: Please see the field trip letter going home in this week's communication folder. You will need to log on to Parent Portal to complete a field trip permission form, as well as, pay for your child's trips. As you fill out the form, make sure you complete each blank/box, in order to move forward with the process. Please contact Mrs. Robinson in the front office, if you have any questions!

Mastery Connect: Several math and ELA assessments will be given online this year, using a new site called, "Mastery Connect." Please see a message from our administration, regarding this new tool below:
A key to effective instruction involves using ongoing formative assessment data to gauge students’ progress and guide classroom instruction. In an effort to most effectively assess students’ mastery of the South Carolina College and Career Readiness Standards, several schools in Richland School District Two have been utilizing an assessment tool called MasteryConnect. MasteryConnect empowers teachers with a method to monitor student performance and access a bank of assessment questions aligned with grade level standards and rigor expectations. We are excited that our Bookman Road teachers in grades 2-5 now have access to this resource!
What is MasteryConnect?
MasteryConnect is an online teacher tool and student assessment platform. It allows teachers to efficiently and effectively determine what your child knows and doesn’t know based on standards. Students can take a variety of different assessments and get results instantly. The results are displayed by standard, so while students will still get an overall percentage on any assessment taken, the focus is on the mastery level of each standard. In most cases this is displayed by 3 colors red (remediation), yellow (near mastery), and green (mastery). These colors help teachers, students, parents, and leaders know exactly where your child is on the learning continuum and respond to that data. Based on this information, teachers are able to make adjustments to their lessons as it may be appropriate. Data may suggest that the teacher is ready to continue as planned, the teacher may need to re-teach the lesson, or the teacher may need to group students and differentiate instruction based on individual student needs.
What is Mastery Learning?
Mastery Learning refers to teaching in alignment with our South Carolina standards and providing feedback during the learning so that students can “master” a specific skill and/or concept. Teachers therefore, are able to assess not just using long end-of-unit tests, but also short, quick daily assessments so that students get more immediate feedback, and more learning can take place.
We are continuing to expand our resources to better “light the way” in academics. We are excited to have access to this resource and are anticipating greater levels of student engagement and academic success!
SAIL (Related Arts): Students have been curious about their SAIL schedule this year. A copy of the schedule is under the "Helpful Documents" tab. This year, the students attend a SAIL class for the entire week. This week they have been enjoying art. Next week, we attend the media center.
Academics: Reading/ELA - As readers, the students have begun practicing Daily 5 procedures and reading stamina. Next week, students will continue building their reading stamina and discussing how to choose a "just right" book. They will also take their reading inventory tests, which will determine their Lexile levels for the first nine weeks. The children will have their first spelling pre-assessment. It will contain all of the kindergarten high-frequency words. These will be checked for accuracy and go home next week with a letter explaining how we do spelling in third grade. Students will also complete their MAP reading test next week. In writing, the children have begun a narrative unit. We will continue working on their narrative writing unit next week. Math - As mathematicians, the students are studying number concepts, using Envision Topic 1 (See the family letter below). Students are always welcome to take home their hardback math textbook, to use as a resource throughout the year... please just email me that you'd like one, and I'll check one out to your child! Next week, the children will wrap up their Topic 1. The students will receive a math study guide Thursday, August 29th. It is due Thursday, September 5. Students will have their first math test Friday, September 6. They will then kick off Topic 2 with addition and subtraction properties and meanings. Be sure to check out our Topic 2 family letter below. Just a reminder: It's never to early to have your child begin memorizing his/her multiplication facts! Social Studies - In social studies, the students have kicked off a unit about South Carolina. They're currently studying regions, landforms, the climate, and river systems. Next week, students will continue studying South Carolina's human systems, industries, natural resources, and major cities. Just a note that students have received their first social studies study guide Wednesday, August 28. It is not due until Wednesday, September 11 (the day we will go over it in class).
Open House: I hope you'll be able to join me at Open House, Thursday, September 5, 6:00-6:45. I will be highlighting some important points from my Open House booklet. If are unable to make it, no worries! You will receive an Open House booklet in your child's communication folder the following week with all of the information we go over.
Class Schedule: Be sure to check out our class schedule. You will find it under the "Helpful Documents" tab.
Thank you again for all of your enthusiasm and support! We're going to make a great team and work hard to ensure your child has a successful year in third grade!
